Why I Switched To All Natural Period Products And Why You Should Too

The Beginning

I was 12 when I got my first cycle and from then on it was absolute HELL. For the last 8 years have struggled with my period. Every month I go through days of nonstop cramping, nausea, and deal with a heavy flow. A lot of this is due to a hormone imbalance, something that I can’t control.

I know many women go through similar experiences every month as well. There are also many women who don’t know that natural options exist or believe that they are more expensive, which is untrue. I want to give as much useful information about this topic as I can.

The Reckoning

What you and I can control is what I’m putting inside my body and what I use on it. Typical brands such as Always or Tampax use chemicals in their feminine products. These chemicals are there to make their products more absorbent and to neutralize odor. Their products are not made of breathable material either. However, while using these products you are essentially releasing these chemicals into your body. This can cause cramping to worsen and cause many other problems in the future. Fragrances, Chlorine Dyes, Pesticides, etc do NOT belong down there. These types of pads and tampons are also not great for the environment.

So, I stopped using traditional pads and switched to 100% cotton pads.

The Results

I have been using 100% cotton pads for about 6 months now. My flow has lightened, my cramps have lessened, and I feel better while on my cycle. I believe this is because of 3 reasons:

  1. I can breathe down there, I am not restricted to some blend of plastics that do not allow for air flow. If cotton panties are the best, that same logic should be applied to feminine products.
  2. Chemicals are not being released into my body. It sounds crazy, but I felt a noticeable difference in my cramps within the first month.
  3. I feel better knowing that I’m using the safest disposable options out there while also being environmentally conscious.

Now, making this switch has in no way cured me of my painful cycles and I didn’t expect it to. It is important to be realistic when it comes to period pain. Nothing will take the symptoms completely away, but a combination of small factors can make a huge difference in how you feel while on your cycle.
